20 Things You Didn’t Think You Needed For A Move

The process of moving home can be daunting at the best of times. There are so many things you’ll be thinking of before the big day. And, just when you think you have everything under control, you realise that you’ve missed one or more important steps. But, all is not lost, here are 20 things most people don’t think of when they move. Keep this list close by before your move and everything is bound to go off without a hitch.

  • Declutter – When you starting packing is the best time to take a good look at everything you own. Do you really want to be moving will everything? We didn’t think so. As you pack place things in three piles; keep, discard and donate. This way you’ll only be moving with what you need.
  • Storing – Think about your new place. Will you have space for those four bicycles? How about that large cabinet? If you will not have space you’re going to have to make a plan. Hire a storage unit ahead of time and get moving those larger items before the big day arrives.
  • Packing Assistants – gather up a few friends and let them help you pack before the big day arrives.
  • Materials – decide on how you’ll move items and make sure that you have enough materials for them such as boxes and boxing materials. Don’t forget the bubble wrap.
  • Paper – Make sure that you have the right packing paper.
  • Stickers – Mark fragile items with stickers.
  • Hangers – Place all your clothes on hangers. This way you’ll arrive at your new place and simply need to hang the items.
  • Lists – Keep a detailed list of everything you’ve packed and where it needs to go in your new home.
  • The Plot – Layout your new home and decide where everything will go ahead of time.
  • Coolers – Have a few coolers handy for the day of the move. This way your fresh foods won’t spoil.
  • Insurance – Make sure that you are covered for the move.
  • Access – If you are moving into a place with a communal area always make arrangements to park your van close to your property. This may require permission from oversight committees at your new home.
  • Kids and Pets – You do not want little and furry ones getting hurt in the move. Make sure you have someone on call to watch them while you move.
  • Important Things – Keep important documents close by. Do not pack them in boxes which might get lost. This includes passports.
  • Manuals – If you have a set of manual for TV and microwaves always try to keep these together.
  • Sheeting – Keep sheeting either material or plastic on hand for the big move, you never know when you’ll need it.
  • Assistant – Get a trusted person to lock up your old place once you’re done. And, another to help at the new place.
  • Get Sleep – With all the excitement on the day, you’ll need every bit of energy you have. Try no go out the night before the move and rather opt for a little shut-eye.
  • The Area – before you move, make sure you know where everything is. Where you’ll find the grocer and where you’ll need to pick up the children.
  • All Installations – If you have a subscription service, make sure it’s moved to the new house. The same goes for bills.
